Weight loss tip -EAT SOUP
When the weather is cold and wet, the thought of a bowl of hot soup is as comforting as a hug from a loved one wearing fleece.
Not only is soup warming, but it is quick to make from scratch and healthy too – if you avoid cream and too much butter, that is. But why should we consume soup when trying to lose weight? because it keeps you fuller for longer!
Imagine you are eating a plate of chicken and vegetable with a glass of water; our stomach is like a sieve, the water would just filter through quickly whilst the chewed meat and veg would take a little longer. Now imagine if you whizzed all the food and water together to make a soup, this would mean the whole meal would take longer to filter through thereby keeping you fuller for longer. Ta dah! Simples.
I love making soup. I hate waste and it is a great way to use up leftovers.
Example: The other day I placed a small butternut squash, unpeeled onion, a pepper drizzled in olive oil and a small chilli on a baking tray and shoved it in the oven on a high temperature for about 45mins whilst I walked the dogs. When I got back, I popped the kettle on to make some stock with a stockpot, squeezed out the onion, scraped out the flesh of the squash – an ice-cream scoop is good – then put the whole lot in the pan with my stock and whizzed it up with my hand blender. you could of course use a normal blender but that means more washing up! It tasted great and was effortless.
A good idea is to use up leftover salad leaves too. Lettuce is good for inducing sleep so a cup before bed will help you get some zzzzs; which by the way, has also been shown to increase weight loss.
If you like your soup chunky, just blend half.
Include tinned beans too, they are filling and will improve the protein content if you are only using vegetables.
Just another quick one. Boil kettle for some stock, throw in a small bag of frozen peas and some fresh mint. blend and enjoy.
Why not top your soup with a little grated cheese, natural yoghurt or toasted seeds.
